How common is common sense?

Experience suggests not very. Indeed, there seems to be a serious lack of it!

So why is it this? Why is it so many people in business hide behind facts & figures, acronyms and general jargon? Isn’t it time we got back to communicating in good old fashioned plain English that everyone can understand? Or is the real reason for all this marketing speak that people are trying to dress up weak ideas into something else in a hope that others don’t see through them?

One of the most important things we’ve learnt over the years is to challenge everything; it’s the only way to be sure that you’re making the right decision. There are a lot of successful businesses out there and a lot that could do better if they simply thought things through, asked the right questions and looked ahead before jumping in. It’s true what they say: ‘Fail to plan – plan to fail’.

Keeping things simple would be a good start. However, unless the managers and decision makers set the tone, those further down the ladder will continue to copy in an attempt to get on in the company.

So here’s to common sense. Let’s hope that it makes a comeback soon so we can all start to understand what we’re all talking about!
